CHARTING MALAYSIA’S STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS FOR APEC 2020 AND BEYOND
MINISTRY OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INDUSTRY (CLIENT)

Description :
  • Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2019. Established in 1989, with Malaysia as one of the founding members, its primary purpose is to facilitate economic growth and prosperity in the region by removing barriers to trade and investment “at the border”, enhancing supply chain connectivity “across the border” and improving the business environment “behind the border”.
  • The two documents underpinning APEC are the Bogor Goals adopted by APEC Economic Leaders in 1994 and the Osaka Action Agenda 1995. The Osaka Action Agenda was updated in 2002 with the identification of 15 areas in which actions were needed in order to achieve the Bogor Goals. These foundational documents spearheaded APEC based on 9 general principles. By 2020, the timeframe for completing the Bogor Goals would have come to an end.
  • Malaysia will host APEC in 2020. Malaysia last hosted APEC in 1998. As the host economy next year, Malaysia has two major tasks. Firstly, Malaysia is required to chart the strategic directions consisting of theme and priority areas for Malaysia, and APEC in general, for the year 2020. Secondly, Malaysia will also need to lead the process in producing the APEC Post 2020 Vision.
